We've tried ever brand, from high-end kibble to Farmer's. We have a 4 1/2 year old mixed breed Staffy Jack named Cooper, who was adopted during Covid from a local shelter, and a 2 1/2 year old Golden Retriever. Cooper was diagnosed at 3 years old with an internal liver shunt. He was out aged for much success with surgery and required a specific diet. He had been eating Farmer's, but he needed a more easily digestible, low protein diet. We tried another "freshly" prepared brand's liver disease diet, but Cooper hated it.
So, this is all to explain that we had one dog with special needs and a wonderfully healthy retriever "puppy" that we wanted desperately to provide with optimum nutrition.
After much online research, I discovered Petaluma. When I compared it to the other plant based dog foods, it won hands down for quality, sustainability, and for being nutrient dense.
As Registered Nurses, we are committed to our health, the health of the community, planet, and our doggies. I originally tried Petaluma for Bear, our Golden, and cooked Cooper's food. I have slowly integrated Petaluma dog food into Cooper's meals with smaller portions of rice and vegetables. Both dogs are thriving, and Bear is the fastest Golden ever.
I am Not recommending Petaluma dog food for any dog with liver, or other chronic issues. As an RN, however, I am sharing what I know to be true. Remember, protein is crucial for dogs. It does not matter, however, whether or not it is from plant or meat sources. What does matter is inflammation, cancer, and joint disease. Petaluma dog food provides our dogs with proper nutrition, vitamins, and minerals without adding inflammation and other issues as they age.
Lastly, Petaluma dog food doesn't have that bad smell of processed trash that most "kibble" dog foods do.

I purchased samples of the PB+SP & the pumpkin with glucosamine as well as a bag of the Roasted Peanut Butter & Sweet Potato & I couldn’t open the bags fast enough for our 3 rescue Dachshund mixes that LOVE FOOD! They get Petaluma mixed in with their homemade meals but they also love Petaluma as a treat!
